Kīhei works because condos, kitchens, laundry, groceries and the Kamaʻole beaches are close together. Wailea costs more but makes the resort itself part of the solution — pools, beaches, dining and short walking routes. Kāʻanapali does the same on the West Side.
With toddlers, a beach, lunch, nap and pool can legitimately be the entire day. Older children make snorkeling, surf lessons, whale watches and Pīpīwai more realistic.
The biggest family planning mistake is borrowing an adult itinerary and trying to make the children tolerate it.
Maui Ocean Center in Māʻalaea is our easiest family backup when the ocean is rough or the weather is poor. The aquarium is open rain or shine and the normal visit is roughly two to three hours.

The Open Ocean exhibit uses a large underwater tunnel to put sharks and rays overhead, while the Humpbacks of Hawaiʻi Sphere gives children a way to experience whale behavior even outside peak whale-watching conditions. It is educational enough for adults and visual enough for younger kids.
Start somewhere easy, such as Ulua/Mōkapu or Kapalua Bay on a calm morning. If the child is nervous, use flotation or a guide. Twenty good minutes beats dragging a child around a reef because the adults want to see another turtle.

Do it only if the children handle winding roads and long car days reasonably well. If not, a North Shore + Upcountry day can deliver waterfalls, farms, food and scenery with much less time strapped into a car seat.
Bring snacks, dry clothes and sun protection everywhere.
Keep ocean-inexperienced children within arm's reach.
Maui Ocean Center is currently open daily 9 a.m.–5 p.m.; check the official site for holiday hours and tickets.
