South Maui vs. West Maui: Where Should You Stay?

South Maui

The low-gamble coast. Short drives, the most guarded beaches on the island, and water that's usually flat before the wind comes up. If it's your first trip or you're travelling with kids, start here.

• Why go — Everything is close. Nothing on your list is more than a short drive.
• The experience — Beach in the morning, lunch ten minutes later, a different beach in the afternoon.
• The tradeoff — It's a strip, not a town. The charm is the water, not the streetscape.
• The risk — The trade winds fill in around 11 a.m. off south Kīhei. Swim and snorkel early or the afternoon turns choppy.

South Maui — Kīhei to Mākena. 20–30 minutes from Kahului Airport; 30–40 minutes to Wailea and Mākena.

South Maui strings its beaches along one road, so Kīhei, Wailea and Mākena each feel different while sitting on the same coast. It is also convenient to Māʻalaea boat departures and reasonably positioned for Upcountry and Haleakalā.

Kīhei

The value base, and the practical one.

Kīhei gives you grocery stores, casual restaurants and condos with kitchens, usually at better value than Wailea.

Kamaʻole I, II and III all have lifeguards and bathrooms, three guarded beaches in a row, which exists nowhere else on the island. Kam III has the most parking and the most shade, so it's the one to pick with kids. Kam II has street parking only, no lot. The lots open at 7 a.m. and close at 8 p.m., and PARK MAUI applies at the paved Kam I and III lots — $10 a day for nonresidents.

Keawakapu is where locals send people when the Kamaʻole lots fill; you can rent paddle boards and snorkel gear on the water in front of the Mana Kai, and the best parking and access is at the Mana Kai or lot II.

Wailea

The resort base, where the beaches sort by who is staying where.

Wailea gives you resorts, spas, golf and polished dining, and the Wailea Beach Path connects them, so you can walk to the beach, the pool and dinner without getting back in the car.

Wailea Beach fronts the Grand Wailea, Four Seasons and Marriott Elua. Polo Beach fronts the Fairmont and has the easiest access of the lot, with more parking and better facilities than Wailea, Ulua or Mōkapu. Keawakapu is where everyone else goes. Wailea Beach has no lifeguard.

The best snorkeling in Wailea isn't a beach, it's the reef between Ulua and Mōkapu — go in at either end and work the reef in between. The public can rent gear in front of the Andaz at Mōkapu.

Monkeypod and Tommy Bahama handle lunch; Morimoto Wailea is the one worth the splurge after a morning in the water.

Mākena

Quieter and less developed, and the stretch where the ocean has the final say.

Mākena gives you a more natural coastline, and restaurants and shops thin out quickly as you head south.

Big Beach is the only beach down here with two lifeguards, which matters because the shorebreak is genuinely strong. Maluaka is the beach we connect most strongly with Turtle Town. Poʻolenalena (Chang's Beach) is the best easy stroll in South Maui and the most picturesque setting at this end, with no facilities and no lifeguard; a short hike north reaches Secret Beach, one of the most enchanting beaches on Maui. West Maui

The postcard coast. One long shoreline of resorts with Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi sitting on the horizon, and a paved beach walk you can do in flip-flops from your room. If you want to park the car for a week and look at an ocean, come here.

• Why go — The Kāʻanapali beach walk. Resort to resort on pavement, no car, no parking.
• The experience — Walk to the beach, walk to dinner, watch the sun go down behind Lānaʻi.
• The tradeoff — You're 50 to 60 minutes from the airport, and most days out mean the same highway back.
• The risk — Only two beaches on this entire coast have lifeguards. Know which two before you pick a swim spot.

West Maui — Lahaina to Kapalua. 50–60 minutes from Kahului Airport.

Kāʻanapali

The classic resort corridor, and the reason people park the car.

Kāʻanapali's long beach and beachwalk make it easy to have a full vacation day without getting in the car. The sunsets can be exceptional, with Lānaʻi and Molokaʻi sitting across the channels.

At the north end, Kahekili (Airport Beach) is one of the best shore snorkels in West Maui. Hanakaʻōʻō (Canoe Beach) at the south end is one of only two guarded beaches on this coast.

Nāpili and Kapalua

Smaller, greener and quieter than Kāʻanapali.

Nāpili feels smaller and more intimate. Kapalua is greener and quieter, with excellent coastal scenery and golf.

Kapalua Bay is a standout snorkel on a calm day, a protected crescent that works when the rest of the coast doesn't. D.T. Fleming is the best beach in West Maui for lifeguards and facilities, and the second of the coast's only two guarded beaches.

The Kapalua Coastal Trail is an easy walk but rougher underfoot in places than it looks — wear sneakers, not sandals. Dragon's Teeth (Makāluapuna Point) is its own short trail, a half mile round trip from the public-access lot near the Ritz-Carlton; stay on the marked path, away from the Honokahua burial grounds and the golf course.

Honolua is worth knowing for snorkeling when it's calm, but it has no sandy beach — rocky shoreline only, so don't plan a beach day there.

Lahaina

Still rebuilding, and worth knowing what has reopened.

West Maui continues rebuilding after the 2023 fires. Front Street reopened to vehicle traffic from Pāpalaua to Shaw, plus Dickenson and Prison, on August 1, 2026, with Market, Papelekane and Mokuhinia still closed for ongoing work. Stay off private property and support the businesses that are open.

Beaches and Snorkeling

Both coasts are excellent, and the day decides more than the coast does.

The coast-level difference is spread. South Maui gives you more beaches close together and more of them guarded; West Maui gives you one long shoreline you can walk. Do not choose a side because someone told you one has better snorkeling — conditions decide, not allegiance.

Families

South Maui for the lifeguards; West Maui for the resort logistics.

South Maui has five guarded spots, West Maui has two — that is the deciding line if you are travelling with young swimmers. Kīhei is one of Maui's most practical family bases because condos, kitchens, groceries and the lifeguarded Kamaʻole beaches are all easy. Kāʻanapali is the easy resort-family answer because the beachwalk, pools, restaurants and activities reduce logistics.

Couples

Wailea is our easiest South Maui recommendation; Kapalua is the West Maui equivalent if you prefer a greener, quieter setting.

Nāpili can feel more intimate and less formal. Couples who would rather spend on food and activities than the room often do very well in Kīhei.

Which One Should You Pick

Pick by how you want the week to feel, not by which coast photographs better.

• First trip — South Maui. Short drives, calm mornings, fewer ways to waste a day.
• With kids — South Maui, for the lifeguards and for Kam III's shade and parking.
• You don't want to drive — West Maui, Kāʻanapali specifically.
• A week and you want both — Split it once: four nights and three, not two and two and two.
• Four days or fewer — Don't split at all.

Practical Tips

Do not split a seven-night stay just because you cannot decide. Moving hotels costs vacation time.

If Road to Hāna is a major priority, South Maui is somewhat better positioned, though either side can do it. From Wailea it is already a 6–7 hour driving day before you stop for anything, and West Maui adds to that at both ends.

If you plan multiple West Maui-specific days, stay in West Maui. It avoids repeated cross-island drives.

Book the water for the morning and the land for the afternoon. The trades come up around 11 a.m. off south Kīhei, and no forecast changes that.

Check which beach has a lifeguard before you check which has the better photo. South Maui has five guarded spots; West Maui has two.

Wear sneakers on the Kapalua Coastal Trail. It looks like a paved resort path and it is rougher than that in places.

Is South Maui or West Maui better for a first trip?

South Maui, for most people. The drives are short, the mornings are usually calm and there are fewer ways to waste a day. West Maui is equally strong if what you want is specifically a resort vacation.
