For a South Maui honeymoon, choose Wailea for polished resorts and the beach path, Mākena for privacy or South Kīhei for a casual condo trip; Hotel Wailea is our most romantic hotel, and Mana Kai puts Keawakapu out the front door with a lawn made for sunset.
Pay for location before room category. Beach access and walkability will shape every day.

Wailea, Mākena or Kīhei?
These are three different vacations, even though they share one coastline.
- Best for a polished honeymoon — Wailea. Luxury resorts, high-end condos, multiple beaches and a coastal path that ties the area together.
- Best for privacy — Mākena. Less development, quieter sand and excellent condo settings, with almost every meal requiring a drive.
- Best for casual couples — South Kīhei. Beach-town energy, strong condo inventory and easy food at a lower price than Wailea.
- Best for quiet value — North Kīhei. More residential and often less expensive, but less walkable to the beaches and restaurants most visitors picture when they think of Kīhei.
Couples already choosing Wailea should compare a Wailea resort with a Wailea condo. The resort adds service, pools, dining and programming; the condo adds space, a kitchen and a quieter setup without giving up Wailea. South Kīhei is a different, more casual vacation — not simply the cheaper version of the same one.
Best South Maui Hotels for Couples
Choose the property by atmosphere first, then the room.
The most romantic hotel in South Maui. It is adults-only and intentionally quiet, with large suites and a hillside setting. The tradeoff is simple: it overlooks the coast instead of sitting directly on it.
See Hotel Wailea availability
The best full-service beachfront choice. Wailea Beach, consistently strong service and several serious restaurants make it easy to spend whole days on property.
See Four Seasons Maui availability
Its Lobby Lounge has live music through the evening, with a nightly hula show and torch lighting at sunset. It is an easy pre-dinner drink without another reservation or drive.
The trendiest of the major Wailea resorts. Choose it for modern design, Mōkapu Beach and Feast at Mōkapu; skip it if you want a traditional, quiet resort atmosphere.
See Andaz Maui availability
The calm, spacious luxury option. All-suite accommodations and Polo Beach suit longer stays and couples who want room without leaving a full-service resort.
See Fairmont Kea Lani availability
The activity-forward Wailea choice. It is adjacent to Wailea Beach rather than sitting on one continuous beachfront parcel, but the location near the Shops at Wailea is convenient.
See Wailea Beach Resort availability
The biggest resort experience in South Maui. The grounds, pools, luau and dining make it a destination in itself. Couples seeking quiet should choose carefully within the resort or stay elsewhere.

Best South Maui Condos for Couples
Wailea and Mākena condos keep the higher-end setting while adding space and a kitchen.
Our romantic condo pick. It is quiet, low-density and directly on Palauea Beach, with some of the best beach walkability in Mākena. It is not walkable to a useful concentration of restaurants or shops.
See Makena Surf availability
The best condo setting for couples who want the beach to organize the day. Keawakapu runs out the front door, the lawn is made for sunset and both Kīhei and Wailea are close.
See Mana Kai availability
The best mix of Wailea privacy and oceanfront path access. Elua Beach and the Wailea Beach Path are directly in front, and the property feels calmer than the largest resorts.
See Wailea Elua availability
The easiest luxury condo for walking to dining and shopping. You get Wailea Beach, the coastal path and direct access to the Shops at Wailea without giving up a residential setup.
See Wailea Beach Villas availability
The relaxed beach-access value within Wailea. The grounds reach Keawakapu and multiple pools spread people out. Unit condition varies, so compare individual listings carefully.
See Wailea Ekahi availability
The best non-oceanfront Wailea value. The units are spacious and the setting is calm, but you are walking farther or driving for the beach.

Condos for Morning Snorkels and Sunsets
- Mana Kai Maui: Keawakapu is out the front door for an early snorkel, and the lawn is made for sunset.
- Wailea Ekahi: the grounds reach Keawakapu for the morning snorkel. Many units, not all, face the sunset, and the community pavilion right on Keawakapu Beach is a great place to watch it.
- Wailea Elua: right on Ulua Beach and close to Mōkapu, so the morning snorkel starts at your door. The Wailea Beach Path out front is an easy sunset walk.
Snorkel before the wind. South Maui water is generally best early.
Best Beaches and Walks for Couples
South Maui's advantage is how many good mornings fit within a short stretch of coast.
- Best all-around beach — Keawakapu. Long enough for a real walk, usually best early and easy to combine with snorkeling, paddleboarding or a slow morning.
- Best quiet beach — Palauea. A beautiful Mākena crescent with limited parking and few facilities.
- Best resort path — Wailea Beach Path. Use it early or near sunset; it connects beaches and resorts but has little shade.
- Best easy snorkel — Ulua and Mōkapu. Sandy entries and reef close to shore when the ocean is calm. Go early before wind and parking become issues.
- Best sunset lawn — Kīhei Surfside above Keawakapu. An easy place to sit above the water when you want grass instead of sand.
- Best wild-coast walk — Hoapili Trail. Rough lava and full sun make it harder than the flat profile suggests; go early and carry water.
None of Wailea's beaches has a lifeguard. Resort surroundings do not change the ocean, and a calm-morning recommendation is not a guarantee.
Best Romantic Things to Do in South Maui
The strongest South Maui days start early, slow down at midday and stay close for sunset.
- Snorkel Molokini early. Kīhei Boat Ramp is close for smaller boats; larger trips often leave from Māʻalaea.
- Take an outrigger canoe. Several Wailea properties offer cultural ocean experiences directly from the beach.
- Book a sunset sail. A South Maui departure keeps the evening easy and avoids a long drive after dark.
- Pair Upcountry with Haleakalā sunset. Kula and Makawao give the day texture before the summit; sunset needs no current reservation.
- Use South Maui Gardens for a casual night. Food trucks, outdoor seating and Kitoko make it an easy alternative to another resort dinner.
- Choose one luau. Feast at Mōkapu is our favorite intimate South Maui choice; Grand Wailea and Te Au Moana are larger resort productions.
Where to Eat
Wailea handles special occasions; Kīhei keeps the rest of the trip relaxed and varied.
- Most romantic — The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea. The quiet hillside setting is the reason to go; request a table with a view.
- Best special-occasion dinner — Spago. Our choice when the food needs to match the setting.
- Best modern resort dinners — Morimoto Maui and Nobu Maui. Choose based on the menu and the property you are already using.
- Best view away from a major resort — Gather on Maui. A broad Wailea outlook and an easier atmosphere.
- Best intimate casual dinner — Kitoko. A small, polished food-truck experience inside South Maui Gardens.
- Best everyday Kīhei value — Cafe O'Lei. A dependable casual lunch or dinner when you want a broad menu and an easy bill.
- Best Thai — Maui Thai Bistro. Our South Maui pick when you want Thai instead of another seafood or resort meal.
- Best dessert in Wailea — Lappert's at the Shops at Wailea. Walk over after dinner and get ice cream.
Choose the occasion first, then find the best option in your region. Crossing the island for an ordinary dinner is rarely worth it.
A Three-Day South Maui Couples Plan
Three good days need one ocean morning, one slow day and one change of scenery.
- Day 1 - Keawakapu or Wailea Beach early, pool at midday, Wailea Beach Path near sunset and a special dinner.
- Day 2 - Molokini or a whale watch in season, no scheduled afternoon, casual dinner in Kīhei or South Maui Gardens.
- Day 3 - North Shore and Upcountry, with Haleakalā sunset only if you both want the longer day.
With five days, add one completely open resort or condo day and one Mākena morning. With seven, add the Road to Hāna or another major island day — not both automatically.
If Hāna is the day, the VIP Private Road to Hāna tour picks you up and lets a guide do the driving.
Practical Tips
- Snorkel before the wind. Ulua, Mōkapu, Keawakapu and Mākena are generally best early.
- Use the path, but do not call all of Wailea walkable. The resort core is connected; Mākena and many condo errands still require a car.
- Check the exact condo unit. Views, renovation quality and air conditioning vary within the same property.
- Expect paid or controlled parking where posted. Beach access rules can change; read the signs rather than relying on an old map pin.
- Bring warm layers for Haleakalā. Coastal weather tells you nothing about the summit.
- Keep the final dinner close. South Maui has enough strong options that a cross-island reservation is unnecessary.
One Last Tip
South Maui is at its best when you stop treating every beach as a stop. Pick one, stay long enough to learn it and come back when the water is good.
Is Wailea or Kīhei better for couples?
Wailea is better for luxury, polished surroundings and a resort-centered trip. South Kīhei is better for casual condos, beach-town energy and value.
Is Mākena good for a honeymoon?
Yes, Mākena is good for a honeymoon if privacy, low-density condos and beach walks matter more than nearby restaurants and shops.
What is the most romantic hotel in South Maui?
Hotel Wailea is our pick. It is adults-only and quiet, though it is not directly beachfront.
What is the best South Maui condo for couples?
For couples, the best South Maui condos are Mākena Surf for privacy and beach setting, Mana Kai for Keawakapu access, and Wailea Elua or Wailea Beach Villas for Wailea path walkability.
Do couples need a car in Wailea?
You can spend resort days without one, but a car is useful for Mākena, Kīhei, Upcountry, Haleakalā and the Road to Hāna.
