The goal is to get through Kahului once, properly, then stop doing errands on vacation.
Where: Kahului, on Maui’s central north coast.
OGG is straightforward, but baggage claim and the rental-car process can take time when several mainland flights arrive together. The airport currently lists Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Hertz, National, Sixt and Thrifty as on-airport rental providers.
If someone is picking you up, the cell phone waiting lot is free for up to 60 minutes. Public parking is free for the first 15 minutes and currently caps at $24 per 24-hour period.
Do the big grocery run once and eat where the island eats while you are already in Kahului.
Kahului has the island’s biggest grocery stores and the easiest Costco run. Condo travelers in particular should buy the week’s basics now instead of turning three future mornings into grocery errands.
Across from Costco, Plate Lunch Marketplace is one of our favorite arrival-day solutions because a group can split up among several trucks and meet back at the tables. The lineup changes, but Thai Mee Up, Havens, poke and local plate-lunch trucks are the kind of options you are coming here for.
Tin Roof is another easy local favorite when one place is enough. The point is not to make lunch a destination reservation — it is to eat well without wasting the first afternoon.
There is one nearby attraction substantial enough to fill several hours — with one condition.
Maui Ocean Center is open daily, rain or shine, and works well for families who land early. But OGG has no baggage lockers or storage facilities. A car full of visible suitcases in a parking lot is not a workaround.

Drop bags with your hotel first if they will hold them. If you cannot secure the luggage, skip the attraction and keep moving.
The Maui Swap Meet is tempting — but luggage still comes first.
If you land on a Saturday morning, the Maui Swap Meet runs at UH Maui College and is one of the island’s best local markets. It is worth a stop for produce, flowers, food and locally made goods only if the bags are already safely stored.
Do not make your first Maui memory worrying about a car full of luggage.
Flight day is for breakfast and a short walk, not one last adventure.
The airport tells travelers to follow their airline’s check-in guidance, and that is the right answer. What the map does not show is the time absorbed by traffic into Kahului, fueling the car and returning it before you even reach the terminal.
Leave a comfortable buffer. Missing the last swim is better than watching the boarding time disappear from a rental-car line.
The first day sets the pace for the whole trip.
Get the car, get the groceries, eat something good and go look at the ocean. Maui is not going anywhere, and the people who start slowly usually enjoy more of it.
