Our pick: Small-Group Road to Hana Adventure Tour with Pickup & Lunch
Best for first-time Hāna visitors who want a small-group tour capped at 15, with hotel pickup, breakfast and lunch included.
Our favorite beach on Maui — beautiful enough to make you cancel the next stop.
Hamoa is a compact crescent with real natural shade, clear water on good days and a setting that feels completely removed from the resort coast. Park legally along Haneoʻo Road and walk down the stairs. There are showers but no full public restroom facilities.
When the ocean is calm, it can be a wonderful swim. When the shorebreak is running, it is not a beginner beach. Stand and watch before getting in.
The most useful beach in town — culture, facilities and a protected bay in one stop.
We like Hāna Bay as much for the feeling as the water. Local families, paddlers and fishermen share the park with visitors, and it is one of the easiest places to slow down and actually feel Hāna. Current county information lists 7:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. hours, restrooms, three showers, picnic pavilions and a water tap.
One of the prettiest drive-by beaches in East Maui; usually a look, not a swim.
The current and shorebreak can be strong, and this is not where we send beginners. Drive Haneoʻo Road for the view, then stop for Huli Huli Chicken nearby.
Come for black sand and lava coastline, not because you need to swim.
The cove is small and open to moving water. There are no lifeguards. Nonresidents need an advance reservation, so the park should be treated as a scheduled scenery stop rather than an improvised beach day.
Red Sand Beach gets searched constantly, but it is not a simple beach stop. The access trail can be slick and exposed, crowding has created friction, and conditions change. If you consider it while staying in Hāna, go early, understand the access before you start and turn around if the trail feels wrong. We would not build a first-time Road to Hāna day around it.
Never enter brown water after heavy rain.
Watch at least a few full wave sets before deciding to swim at Hamoa or Koki.
Small kids get the most margin at Hāna Bay.
Do not assume people already in the water mean conditions are safe for you.
If Hamoa looks good, stay. East Maui rewards the person who is willing to stop chasing the itinerary.
Hamoa is the best beach on the Road to Hāna. It is our favorite beach on Maui and our first swimming choice in East Maui when conditions are calm — a compact crescent with real natural shade and clear water on good days.
